Attracting candidates
Recruiters are reporting a huge increase in more information about a company’s ESG goals and achievements than ever before. They are attracted to Bcorp companies because they know that they have achieved high standards across Governance, Workers, Customers, Environment and Community. At a basic level they can be assured that the company that they are joining ‘does the right thing’ by their people. They know that they have set goals to reduce waste, improve energy usage, that they give time to charity and community causes. They also know that they will select clients who operate ethically. Joining a company that has the Bcorp certificate is fast becoming a desired candidate request.
Employee engagement & retention
Initial excitement about a new role in a company can wear off over time. Employees feel engaged when the company they work for has purpose, they have a direction they can be part of. They need to know the company has integrity and does what it says it will do. Bcorp certification is not a ticked off exercise. You commit to a way of living and acting as a company with annual impact reports and a recertification every 3 years. Employees can get behind that purpose and the ongoing goals to improve year on year. Not for profits and the government cannot hit climate goals alone. Bcorp is for the for-profit sector and you are legally committing to operate to benefit people, plant and profits rather than just for the shareholders. Because it is long term, and it is about them, people care about Bcorp long term and they want to stay. Everyone has a role to play in Bcorp goals and it brings everyone together despite being in different departments. People stay when they believe in the company, the people, they have development opportunities, and there is a purpose to what they do.
If you add Bcorp and ESG values as part of your onboarding process, every employee will feel part of your wider purpose.
